Abstract
The Jewish population has resided in Syria since the first millennium BC, alongside other religious and ethnic groups that make up Syrian society. Syrian society is composed of diverse population groups with varying religious, sectarian, and ethnic backgrounds, as well as differences in social, economic, and political circumstances.
The establishment of the State of Israel in 1948 and the escalation of the conflict between the Arabs and Israelis, culminating in the Arab defeat in the Six-Day War or June War of 1967, resulted in the Israeli army occupying Syrian Arab lands, specifically the Golan region. As a consequence, Syria has remained in a perpetual state of war with Israel, seeking to reclaim its unlawfully seized territory. As a result, Syria implemented a series of limitations on Syrian Jews, including prohibiting them from leaving Syria and restricting their movement within the country's several regions to avoid potential espionage against the government. Israel and worldwide Zionist Jewish groups took advantage of these conditions to initiate a propaganda campaign against Syria. They accused Syria of engaging in racial and religious persecution of Syrian Jews and using them as hostages in the Arab-Israeli war.
