The Economic Conditions of the Jews of Syria during the French Mandate 1920 - 1946
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Syrian Jewish community made significant contributions to the economic landscape in proportion to their size and economic capabilities. They were recognized as an integral part of Syrian society and actively engaged and collaborated with other communities, especially Muslims, in various economic endeavours. The Jewish community held monopolies in specific professions and had established a presence within them, thereby intertwining their existence with the overall Jewish population. The Syrian society was influenced by religious and social factors, which had a vital role in shaping the occupations that were often associated with each sect. Jewish individuals were engaged in several professional pursuits, with their businesses dispersed throughout numerous Syrian towns. Notably, the cities of Damascus and Aleppo stood out as significant hubs of Jewish presence. Not only were their customers mostly Jewish, but they also included diverse populations within Syrian culture, including Muslims and Christians. This observation suggests that Jews had a significant role within the social fabric of Syrian society.
