Abstract

The current research aims to identify the level of academic stress among university students and the significance of statistical differences in academic stress based on gender variable (male, female), as well as the significance of statistical differences in academic stress based on the field of study variable (scientific, humanities). To achieve the objectives of the research, the researcher developed an academic stress scale consisting of 40 items. Each item has five response options: Completely applies to me, Always applies to me, Sometimes applies to me, Does not apply, Never applies to me.The researcher examined the psychometric properties of the scale, including discrimination and validity (logical, face, and construct validity). Reliability was measured using the test-retest method and Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient. The researcher applied the instrument to a randomly selected sample consisting of 300 third-year students from Kirkuk University (morning studies), with 150 students from scientific colleges and 150 students from humanities colleges. The statistical methods used in the research included Chi-square, Pearson correlation coefficient, Cronbach’s Alpha, one-sample t-test, independent samples t-test, and arithmetic mean. The results of the research indicated that university students experience academic stress. However, there were no statistically significant differences based on gender (male, female), nor there were significant differences based on field of study (scientific, humanities).

In light of the findings, several recommendations and suggestions were formulated.
