The Geopolitical Future of Nineveh Governorate in Northern of Iraq
Main Article Content
Abstract
Future prospects indicate a change in the morphology of the administrative map of Nineveh Governorate, and that the division of Nineveh Governorate is not new. Before 2003, there was a project to transform Tal Afar into a governorate under the name of Al-Jazeera Governorate. But after 2003, the establishment of new governorates was backed by geopolitical tendencies, and they were demarcated on ethnographic bases, in particular, after the referendum of the Kurdistan Region 2017, where the feeling was awakened among many ethnographers to establish their own provinces at the expense of the Nineveh Province. This includes the project to establish the Nineveh Plain Governorate, the establishment of the Tal Afar Governorate project, the establishment of the Sinjar Governorate project, the scenario of the establishment of the Federal Region of Nineveh, and this decentralization in Nineveh Governorate, which regional authorities want to implement with local representatives.
