The Use of Cyberspace and Its Relationship to University Students' Future Perceptions
Main Article Content
Abstract
The current research aims to identify the use of cyberspace among university students and the statistically significant differences in the scale of cyberspace use among university students according to the gender variable (males - females). Also, it examines the future perceptions among university students and the statistically significant differences in the scale of future perceptions among university students according to the gender variable (males - females) and the correlation between the use of cyberspace and future perceptions among university students. The current research was limited to third-year students of Tikrit University colleges in the undergraduate morning studines and of both genders (males - females) for the academic year (2024-2025). The study sample included 300 male and female students, distributed over 3 colleges for the juniors only. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher prepared a cyberspace use scale 32 items in its final form and a future perceptions scale of 43 items in its final form. The validity of the two scales was verified using (content validity - apparent validity - logical validity - construct validity). Then, the discriminatory power of the scales' items was calculated, with a reliability of (0.82) for the use of cyberspace in the test-retest method, and Cronbach's alpha of (0.80). The future perceptions scale came with a reliability of (0.87) in the test-retest method, and Cronbach's alpha of (0.83). After applying the two scales in their final forms to the final application sample, the data were statistically processed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results of the study showed the following: University students are characterized by a weak degree of cyberspace use and the presence of statistically significant differences between males and females in the use of cyberspace in favor of males. University students are characterized by a low degree in future perceptions and the presence of statistically significant differences between males and females in future perceptions in favor of males, and there is a statistically significant negative correlation between the use of cyberspace and future perceptions.
