Abstract

This study is devoted to exploring a blessed passage from the Noble Qur’an, namely the significance of the descriptive term “the other” in the verse: {Have you then considered Al-Lat and Al-Uzza (19) and Manat, the third, the other?} )from Surat An-Najm, 53:19–20), and explaining the reason for describing the third of the three with the word (the other) and not the second?! What is the reason for this description after the third?! And why does the adjective not match its second described?! What are its semantic and rhetorical aspects? What further encouraged us to explore this term and delve into its connotations and meanings is the precision with which Arabic and exegetical scholars have deduced its meanings and interpretations, which has led to its explanation and clarification of its meanings and interpretations, in a scientific style that is appropriate to the era in which we live today. A great effort has been made to clarify its terms and meanings, the accuracy of scholars’ divisions of it, and the precision of its structures. After considering the context of the verses and their connection with preceding and following passages, numerous semantic and rhetorical possibilities identified by classical and modern exegetes were systematically categorized, analyzed, and directed toward coherent conclusions. The findings indicate that the reasons underlying these questions revolve around factors such as inversion (syntactic reordering), alignment with the verse endings, emphasis and magnification, condemnation and belittlement, as well as brevity and conciseness in expression. This was established following a historical and linguistic study of the terms, aiming to link them with the Qur’anic objective and the semantic-miraculous dimension, thereby providing comprehensive insight into the reasons behind the description of the third as ‘al-ukhrā’, based on the discourse of linguists, exegetes, and rhetoricians. With the grace of God Almighty, this work consists of an introduction in which we explain the importance of the topic and the reasons for its selection. It also includes a preface with the title's vocabulary and related terms. It also includes two sections: the first of which deals with description among grammarians in general, and the second with the meaning and rhetoric of Qur' anic description, which is the focus of this study. Finally, it concludes with a summary of the most important findings and recommendations, and a list of the sources and references that helped us extract some of the hidden meanings and context of the discourse.
