The Demographic and Territorial Paradox between Russia and Bangladesh: A Study in Political Geographic Thought
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study explores the stark contrast between Bangladesh and Russia in terms of population density and territorial size, aiming to analyze the geopolitical implications of such a disparity through the lens of political geographic thought Bangladesh, with a land area of approximately 148,460 km² and a population exceeding 170 million, ranks among the most densely populated countries in the world. In contrast, Russia, covering more than 17 million km², is the largest country globally by area but has a relatively smaller population of around 145 million. This paradox raises important questions about how spatial and demographic variables influence geopolitical power, state behavior, and regional influence. The research employs a comparative-analytical approach to understand how space and population interact within geopolitical frameworks. It investigates whether vast territory necessarily leads to geopolitical strength, or whether high population density can generate political leverage despite spatial limitations drawing on classical and contemporary theories in political geography. The study reveals how each country negotiates its geopolitical reality: Russia grappling with the management of vast, sparsely populated regions, and Bangladesh facing challenges of overpopulation within confined borders. The research contributes to the evolving discourse on power, space, and population by offering a nuanced interpretation of territorial and demographic dynamics in geopolitical thought.
