Abstract

This research is concerned with studying the relationship of the phenomenon of pareidolia to creative imaginative inspiration. It is divided into four sections. The first is devoted to the methodological framework of the research, as it includes its problem, which is defined by the two questions: What is the relationship of the phenomenon of pareidolia to imagination and the act of imagination? How can this phenomenon be a source of creative imaginative inspiration? Assuming that there is a relationship between the phenomenon of pareidolia and creative imaginative inspiration, as the research aimed to identify this relationship. The study also includes the importance of research and the need for it, as well as its limits, methodology, and the definition of its terms. The second section deals with the phenomenon of pareidolia. It is a human psychological phenomenon in which the mind responds to a random visual stimulus to transform it into an “image,” “shape,” or “body” that is transformed by projection or visual illusion into something else, with the help of the imagination, which convinces the mind that it is a familiar pattern. The third section is concerned with studying imagination and its importance in the creative process. The fourth section is devoted to studying the relationship of the phenomenon of pareidolia to creative imaginative inspiration, where the research reached to a set of results, the most prominent of which are:

  1. The phenomenon of pareidolia is not just imagination. Rather, in creating images, it depends on physical reality. It also requires interpretive power as a basic tool for determining the features of the imagined form.

  2. The phenomenon of pareidolia is an evolutionary approach to humans, and this approach aims to transform perceptions into materials that have value, meaning, and sensory existence.

  3. A person senses the imaginations resulting from accidents and the environment surrounding him in order to interpret them in a way that is consistent with his stored information, and the first impression of the random shapes or patterns that he sees is a source of inspiration for artistic creativity.

  4. Pareidolia plays an important role in the context of human creativity. Because it challenges our understanding of reality and opens a door to imagination, allowing the visual vocabulary to be separated, the understanding of its components to be improved, and the processes that occur to it to be justified.

  5. Pareidolia constitutes a hidden creative feature that is employed in the artistic field, using techniques and artistic finishes that stimulate the recipient’s imagination as well as visual illusion.
