Abstract

The general conditions in Tunisia before the imposition of protection in 1881 AD were not in the best condition. However, they became worse than they were, as the number of communities exceeded after 1881 AD.  this period was marked by the decline in the numbers of Tunisians, especially after the protection authority worked to encourage and attract foreign labor through immigration and settlement in Tunisia. This was enhanced by the control of its agricultural and mineral wealth at the expense of the country's population, which led to the spread of poverty, destitution and starvation among the Tunisian people.                                                          One of the most important goals of the French authority since the first moments of imposing protection on Tunisia was to eliminate everything that has to do with and influence the social organization of the Tunisian Arab people. At the same time, Tunisian newspapers were subjected to censorship to restrict everything that revolves around freedom of thought. As for the Tunisian judiciary, it considered cases of concern to Tunisians in addition to the consular and Sharia courts and the rabbinic courts, but after imposing protection the French judiciary in Tunisia became the reference for the main judicial system in it. When France abolished the consular courts, it was a start to canceling the rest of the privileges that European countries enjoyed in Tunisia.
