Abstract
This paper, entitled “A Semantic and Rhythmic Study ofsomeTexts from Modern Arabic Poetrystudies a collection of modern Arabic poetic texts in order to reveal the impact of rhythm on the producton of poetic meaning. It demonstrates that what gives poetry its distinctive character is rhythm. This becomes particularly evident in translation, as translation inevitably alters the characteristics of poetry because of its transfer into another language system and its own linguistic rules.
Rhythm, which may be defined as what is lost from poetry in translation, is not confined to meter and rhyme . Rather, it is created through the rhetorical devices employed in the text, the sounds of the poem, its morphological structures, the syntactic relationships among its words, and its visual rhythm. All these elements interact and work together to produce the larger meaning known as the poem.
The selected poems by a number of poets demonstrate the significance of meter and rhyme in producing the poetic quality of the text. They also show that meter and rhyme are neither mere ornamentation nor simply devices for memorization; rather, they are capable of flexibility and variation in ways that serve meaning.
