Abstract

Al-Burda by Imam Al-Busiri is one of the most famous poems in praise of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is also known as “Al-Kawakib Al-Durriyah fi Madḥ Khayr Al-Bariyyah” and it is considered a masterpiece of Sufi poetry and prophetic eulogies.

The poem consists of 160 verses and follows the Bahr Al-Basit (a classical Arabic poetic meter). It is renowned for its eloquent language and profound spiritual meanings. The poem begins with the poet’s reflections on divine love and spiritual longing, then transitions to confession of sins and repentance. It describes the Prophet’s status, virtues, miracles, and noble character, emphasizing his intercession for the Ummah on the Day of Judgment.

This poem is regarded as one of the most significant works in Islamic literature and has been widely appreciated throughout the Muslim world. Numerous commentaries have been written about it, and it has been translated into multiple languages.

It is considered one of the greatest poems of praise for the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in Arabic and Islamic literature. It is a Sufi eulogy that extols the virtues of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), expressing spiritual love for him and humility before God, seeking intercession and forgiveness. It has a Sufi spiritual character and it is used in religious gatherings and Mawlid celebrations.

The influence of Al-Busiri's Al-Burda poem was widespread and profound in the Islamic world, literary, spiritual, and cultural. Its impact extends to this day, becoming a model to be emulated. Many poets have followed its example in their praise of the Prophet, writing poems in its meter and rhyme, such as Ahmed Shawqi's Nahj al-Burda. It influenced the development of the language of praise of the Prophet, using sophisticated rhetorical imagery and sincere emotional expression.
