Main Article Content
Abstract
This research examines French policy towards the Republic of Djibouti during the tenure of the late French President François Mitterrand. It presents the outlines of France foreign policy and the evolution of Franco-African relations, with a particular focus on the impact on Djibouti within the framework of the France-Afrique system and the Cold War era and its aftermath. It explores Mitterrand's true perception of the importance of Africa, and Djibouti specifically, as well as the extent to which this policy towards Djibouti aligns with France's overall foreign policy towards Africa. It also analyzes the political aspects and implications of this policy on the region and the actual implementation of French policy in Djibouti, considering its strategic geographical location and the establishment of the largest French military base there, which demonstrates France's influence and military strength. Furthermore, it examines the interest of France in Djibouti for the protection of its political, economic, and cultural interests in Africa.
