Abstract

She is the wife of the Abbasid Caliph al-Mu'tadid Billah and the mother of the Abbasid caliph al-Muqtadir Billah. She was a slave girl of al-Mu'tadid. Her official name is al-Saida (the Lady) while Shagab is the nickname given to her by al-Mu'tadid for she was a trouble-maker. Her son  was pledged a Caliphate at the age of thirteen years old and continued his rule for a quarter of a century, during which the lady controlled the reins of power. Shagab played a major and influential role in the management of the state and ruling affairs, including the dismissal and appointment of ministers and senior officials. She recruited women to assist in  her machinations and in government affairs as when she appointed Countess Thamal in the position of chief justice.  Jurists, judges, senior officials and butlers gather in her court on Fridays to implement her provisions and signatures. Due to her interest in medicines and poisons to get rid of all those who object to her ambition, she set up a hospital in Baghdad under her supervision, whose doctor was Sinan bin Thabit and the amount of it allowance was 7,000 dinars.
