Situational and Spatial Variation of Old People in Salah-Din Province

Abstract
This study aims to identify the size and characteristics of population between 65 years and over in Salah al-Din Governorate for the period 1997-2017, and their distributes in administrative units according to environment and gender. The study, furthermore, elaborates on the demographic characteristics, including the age structure of the elderly and the pyramids of the population, as well as the educational status of this population and marital and economic structure.
Predicting the size of the elderly population in the governorate in 2027according to environment and gender helps in developing the necessary plans and thus build policies for the purpose of providing the necessary care for this age.
The study found that the size of the elderly population in the governorate in 1997 is (27,507) ; the represent 3.2% of the total population, and in 2017 it rises to (41958) people, representing 2.7%. The number of elderly females is greater than the elderly males, as it reached (15543) people in 1997 and increased to (22949) people in 2017, thus the gender ratio for the elderly is decreased, It is also concluded that there are elderly people who live below the poverty line and suffer from many diseases, and the study recommended certain plans to be made for the sake of taking care of elderly population in the future. The study suggests the establishment of Supreme Council for the Elderly Population in the governorate, the establishment of a hospital for the elderly, and providing them with free medical treatement.
