Abstract

This research aims to determine the impact of the challenges and opportunities strategy on the acquisition and retention of literature and texts among first-year vocational students. The researcher selected a sample of 69 students, excluding those who had failed the previous year. The experimental group consisted of 35 students, while the control group comprised 34. The researcher statistically matched the following variables: students' age, parents' educational attainment, and their Arabic language grades from the previous year. An achievement test consisting of 40 multiple-choice items was developed and reviewed by a panel of experts and specialists to verify its validity, analyze the test items, and calculate its variance. Appropriate statistical methods were used, and all test items were found to be valid. The split-half method was employed to calculate the test items, and the data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient, which was corrected using the Spearman-Brown formula, yielding a value of 0.80. After the experiment, which lasted a full semester, the post-test was administered to the students. After analyzing and statistically processing the students' responses using a t-test, a statistically significant difference was found between the two research groups. The results showed that the experimental group, who studied using the challenges and opportunities strategy, outperformed the control group, who studied using the traditional method, in the post-test. Two weeks later, the researcher re-administered the test to measure retention of achievement, and the result was positive in favor of the experimental group. In light of the research findings, the researcher concluded that the challenges and opportunities strategy contributed to raising the academic achievement level of first-year vocational students and maintaining that achievement. The researcher also made several recommendations and suggestions.
