Abstract

Babylon Governorate is a leading agricultural region, with agricultural land comprising 70% of its total area. However, it faces numerous challenges, with desertification being one of the most prominent environmental problems. Human factors directly contribute to land degradation and desertification. This research aims to study the impact of human factors on desertification in the governorate by analyzing land use, changes in vegetation cover, and the effects of agricultural, pastoral, and industrial activities on the soil. The research employed spatial analysis, along with field data collection and interviews with local residents and experts. The results showed that increased unsustainable agricultural activities, deforestation, and unplanned urban expansion contribute to soil degradation and loss of vegetation cover, exacerbating the problem of desertification. The research recommends adopting sustainable land management strategies, such as improving irrigation methods, increasing afforestation, and implementing policies to reduce encroachment on agricultural land. It also recommends utilizing modern technology for desertification monitoring and environmental planning to ensure the sustainability of natural resources in Babylon Governorate
