Spatial distribution of Cereal Crops in Anbar Governorate
Main Article Content
Abstract
Al-Anbar Governorate is distinguished by possessing the necessary geographical factors for agricultural development, with vast arable lands totaling 55,878,708 acres, comprising one-third of Iraq’s area in its western part. It also has abundant surface water resources, including the Euphrates River and several lakes, in addition to the potential of groundwater and the availability of agricultural labor. Therefore, the study emphasizes the importance of adopting modern scientific methods in agriculture and making optimal use of all natural and human resources, which would contribute to making agriculture a valuable economic resource for the governorate in particular and the country in general.
This study aims to conduct a geographical analysis of the agricultural components in Al-Anbar Governorate and to identify the main patterns of grain crops, relying on field data. The results show that there are three major grain crops cultivated in the governorate: wheat, corn, and barley. The study adopted the administrative unit (districts) due to the governorate’s large area. The existing agricultural potential was a key motivation for conducting this study, especially given the political events the country has gone through, which have negatively impacted the agricultural sector. As a result, agriculture has become a secondary occupation for many residents who have turned to government and administrative jobs.
