The Morphometric and Hydrological Analysis of the Tigris River Section between Samarra Dam and Al- Muthanna Bridge

Abstract
The topic of the study was chosen due to its significance. The study area is located in the northern part of the Mesopotamian plain in central lraq, specifically within the region stretching from the south of Samarra city to the north of Baghdad. It is bordered to the east by Samarra District, Al- Duluiya and Diyala Governorate; to the west by Salah Al-Din Governorate. Geographically, the area lies between latitudes) "0،33'33ْº-33"0،'50،)N and longitudes )º43 - "0،'50،º"30،'44،º0) E the total area of the study region is 1,178.8 Km2, and the length of the Tigris River within this segment is 162 Km. The study focuses on a morphometric and hydrological analysis of the Tigris River between the Samarra Barrage and Al- Muthanna Bridge .The research relied on field studies, satellite image interpretation, and map analysis, with a specific focus on hydrological variables and their effects on the river course. The study also analyzed the natural and human geographical characteristics and placed emphasis on cross – sectional analysis in terms of width ,depth ,and area of the cross – sectional. The analysis revealed that the widest cross – sectional was 261 meters in the Yathrib area,while the narrowest was 123 meters at Al-Muthanna Bridge ,The largest corss – sectional area was 1,178,1 m2 in Al-Duluuya District , while the smallest area was 725.7 m2 at Al-Muthanna Bridge The hydrological analysis of the Tigris Rrver showed that the average annual discharge was 524.3 m3/s for the period 1999-2024 , while the discharge model value was 341.9 m3/s for the same period . The study concluded with a set of findings and recommendations based on the morphometric and hydrological evaluations.
