Abstract

This study explores the role of the school as an educational and social institution in instilling social values among adolescents in the city of Benghazi. Adolescence is considered one of the most critical stages of human development, during which value systems begin to form and solidify. Despite the clear educational role of schools, noticeable signs of declining social values—such as cooperation, respect, and responsibility—have raised questions about the effectiveness of schools in promoting these values.

The research hypothesizes a positive relationship between the effectiveness of the school and the reinforcement of social values among students. The study aims to:

1.Examine the extent to which school curricula and extracurricular activities contribute to instilling social values.

2.Assess the influence of teachers and social workers on shaping adolescents’ value-based behavior.

3.Analyze the effectiveness of school-family communication in supporting value education.

A descriptive-analytical methodology was adopted, as it is most suitable for studying educational and social phenomena within their natural context. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select a representative sample of 500 students from 10 preparatory and secondary schools in Benghazi, with attention to gender balance.

The significance of this research lies in its practical dimension, offering insights that can inform the development of value-based educational programs and guide educational policies in Libya toward greater integration of ethical and social values in the learning process.
