Cohesion and Coherence and Their Relation to the Theory of Collocation
Main Article Content
Abstract
The concepts of cohesion and coherence are closely related to text linguistics, and are products of contemporary text linguistics. Therefore, they constitute a duality in the field of text linguistics and discourse analysis. The cohesion connects the surface elements, while coherence lies in the textual world itself. The importance of this research comes from the fact that cohesion and coherence are among the most prominent phenomena that text linguistics students are interested in, as cohesion contributes to textual cohesion. As for the coherence, it is one of the means of arrangement and one of the criteria of the text, which is the verbal arrangement, through the semantic connection. We note from the results that were reached that the connection between the word and the meaning is likely to enable the weaving of speech, and increase its cohesion and coherence, which leads to the cohesion of its parts and the alignment of its pillars. However, looking at each of these two elements separately leads to the loosening of the weaving, the loss of the intent, and the disappearance and obscurity of speech.
