The Effect of Metaphor in the Holy Quran
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper concludes that metaphor is a verbal art that may bring together dissimilar people, reconcile opposites, and reveal a new suggestiveness in expression that the listener does not feel in real use. It is one of the most prominent methods of Arabic rhetoric. There are artistic characteristics that we notice in metaphor, which we summarize as follows:
The metaphor moves the text from the verbal stagnation specified for it to the process of expression, and it is evident in giving the character of action to those who do not act.
The metaphor may represent the exaggeration of the matter, the accuracy of the exaggeration, and the severity of the impact, and it is far from lying. It is noted in the metaphor the descriptive approximation, taking into account the occasion, and a glimpse of the link between the original and the metaphorical transfer.
This semantic development is due to the Holy Book’s reliance in its metaphors on fixed characteristics of things that do not change across generations, but rather remain constant and inherited, which highlights the greatness, eloquence, and miracle of the Holy Qur’an. These qualities have been built into the mental perception of all human beings, and this is the secret of the stability and renewal of the Qur’anic metaphor despite the succession of generations that have dealt with it through reading and interpretation, which makes the significance in a state of constant growth.
