The effectiveness of the Advanced Excitement Scale in identifying gifted students in Sana'a Municipality

Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Dabrowski's Overexcitability Scale in identifying gifted students in the eighth grade. The study was conducted on a sample of eighth-grade students enrolled in the top-performing government and private schools in the capital city of Sana'a (the schools that won the curriculum-based competitions). The sample consisted of 601 male and female students. The research utilized an intelligence test to classify the sample into two groups: gifted and regular. The cutoff score used was an IQ of 120 or above for the gifted group, and below the cutoff score for the regular group. The number of gifted students was 74, while the number of regular students was 527.Then, the Overexcitability Scale was applied to both groups after verifying its psychometric properties. By analyzing the data using appropriate statistical methods in light of the study's objectives, the following results were obtained: There were statistically significant differences at a significance level of 0.05 between the mean scores of the gifted and regular student groups on all dimensions of the Overexcitability Scale and the total score of the scale, in favor of the gifted student group. There was a statistically significant positive correlation at a significance level of 0.05 between the Overexcitability Scale and both the sequential matrices test and Overexcitability Scale and the total score of the scale, in favor of the gifted student group. There was a statistically significant positive correlation at a significance level of 0.05 between the Overexcitability Scale and both the sequential matrices test and academic achievement, with correlation coefficients of 0.495 and 0.371, respectively. These results indicate the effectiveness of the Overexcitability Scale in identifying gifted students. The study recommended several recommendations, including the use of the scale in identifying gifted students in Yemen alongside traditional identification tools.
