Abstract

The agricultural lands surrounding the cities، including the city of Erbil، suffer a gradual decrease day after day due to the architectural crawl towards the surrounding agricultural lands using geographic information systems.

The importance of the topic is reflected in provoking the discussion about the danger of urban expansion at the expense of agricultural lands in order to avoid falling into problems related to planning and in order to take the necessary precautions.

The results of the study showed a significant decrease in the area of agricultural lands in the city of Erbil where the increase in the urban area in the examined area was a major reason for the contraction of agricultural lands in it as the percentage of wasted lands reached (6.77%) between 1990 and 2000 of agricultural lands, and it increased between 2010 and 2022 to (247.71%) and during the past 32 years, (325.04%) of agricultural land was lost.
