Mathematical Geographical Ideas of Arab and Muslim Scholars and Their Astronomical Applications: A Study in Geographical Thought
Main Article Content
Abstract
The practical side of Muslims was related to their interest in the astronomical aspect since the spread of Islam. So they did not overlook the importance of this aspect in their life. This goal was achieved and their interest and care in astronomy increased, because of their great need to set the months, days and hours, as well as to know the times of obligatory prayers, fasting and pilgrimage. That is their interest in the science of the weather to know the conditions of the atmosphere and its fluctuations, because they were in dire need of the rain that revives the earth after its death, and the Muslims adopted the system of arithmetic. It is still in use right in astronomy until the early modern period in the fields of mathematics.
