Obesity and its Relationship to Self-esteem

Abstract
The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing at alarming rates globally, whether in civilized or developing countries. Therefore, obesity is considered one of the most dangerous and important psychological and social health issues in the life of the individual and society. What increases its risks is that it targets body image, which affects the growth and development of the personality. So, the attitudes an individual has towards his body may be negative or positive, and these attitudes may be facilitating or obstructing the individual’s interactions with others. The researcher believes that psychological variables may be affected by the variable of obesity, including self-esteem. The objectives of the current research try identify:
- Self-esteem among university students.
- Differences in self-esteem among university students according to the gender variable (male - female).
- The relationship between obesity and self-esteem among university students.
The study was conducted on male and female students of Anbar University during the academic year 2022-2023. To determine the goals of the ongoing study and create the scale in a rigorous way, the researcher retrieved information on the uniqueness and difficulty of the items, as well as the validity and reliability. The findings of the recent study indicate that self-esteem exists among university students, and there is no significant difference based on gender. However, there are notable variances based on the variable of obesity, favoring those with a normal weight.
