Abstract

The objective of the present study was to uncover the effectiveness of an educational programme to develop reading teaching skills for primary grade teachers in the subject of the Arabic language in Salah al-Din schools in Iraq. To achieve this objective, the experimental curriculum was used. The tools consisted of identifying training needs in reading teaching skills, designing an educational programme to develop teaching skills in the light of their needs, and a reading teaching skills observation card for teachers. The study adopted the experimental method based on single group design (pre - and post-application. After the programme was implemented, the results were statistically analysed. The results showed differences between the average scores of teachers in the pre - and post-application in terms of skills development in favour of the latter, which is indicative of the effectiveness of the programme. No differences were observed attributable to two variables: scientific qualification and years of experience in the degree of effectiveness of the programme in the development of reading skills. Based on the results of the study, a number of proposals were made, the most important of which were to conduct studies on the effectiveness of programs to develop language skills in general and reading in particular at advanced levels of study.
