Abstract

The research discussed the French position on the third coup of Adeeb Shishakli on the nineteenth of December 1949 AD within the series of coups that Syria witnessed during a short period, and considered the French position on controversial issues, as it opened its doors to the Syrian military missions, and to provide the Syrian army with weapons and equipment, with the aim of improving its relations and preventing Syria from falling into the circle of the Iraqi-British agreement and not falling under British influence, and distancing Syria from the union project after Sami al-Hinnawi announced the union project between Syria and Iraq, which caused division among the members of the Syrian army, and Adeeb Shishakli’s unwillingness to sacrifice the republican system for the sake of the monarchy in Iraq. Colonel Adeeb Shishakli, after the success of the coup, formed the Supreme War Council. His task was to take important decisions on the main issues in the country, and he was able, through his cunning, toughness, and political skill to control the rest of the officers carrying out the coup. Because he is more restrained and more knowledgeable about the political affairs of the country than Sami Al-Hinnawi, he followed a middle political style between the style of Hosni the individual leader and Sami Al-Hinnawi's tolerant position, so he gave up the high positions in the army and the state to the military leaders, and the Syrian people received the coup with a sense of anxiety and suspicion in the hearts of the citizens, Because of the bitter experience he went through during the coup of Hosni al-Zaim and Sami al-Hinnawi's coup, and despite the French support for Adeeb Shishakli's coup, there is no evidence of the French role in the coup.
