The Geography of Horn of Africa Countries and their Possible Strategic Dimensions
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Horn of Africa's strategic importance came from its location overlooking the Indian Ocean and controlling the southern entrance to the Red Sea, where the Bab el-Mandab Strait is. Then the area influences global commerce, mainly oil from the Arab Gulf to Europe and the US. The study topic questioned how the Horn of Africa's natural geographical features influenced the desire of large and regional governments to establish territories at this critical area. Since the competing countries control global trade routes, the research seeks to explain the geopolitical and economic importance of their conflict and its causes, as well as the most prominent motives driving their policies and the reasons for their presence in the Horn region. The study also explains the political, economic, and safety boundaries that border this region. Based on the information and data from the countries in the Horn of Africa, the study proposes several recommendations. The most significant one is that these countries should preserve their geographical, navigational, economic, and security significance, despite the ongoing challenges of weakness, poverty, and conflicts. These challenges have motivated various regional powers to take advantage of the situation. In terms of regional orientation, the Horn of Africa is thought to be among the most prominent regions where conflicts are most likely to escalate and where regional and international crises will break out on the continent of Africa as well as throughout the region. In the near future, this competition will continue and intensify, and other nations will enter the fray as new or returning regional powers vie for control of this region.
