الملخص

تعد مدينة الرقة واحدة من بين الحواضر القديمة والعظيمة التي ورد ذكرها لدى اغلب المؤرخين والبلدانين المسلمين كونها واحدة من أهم مدن بلاد الشام التي تقع على نهر الفرات وورد ذكرها في عصر ما قبل الاسلام ، إلا ان أهميتها ازدادت في فترة الدولة العباسية ولاسيما بعد اتخاذها عاصمة للدولة العباسية في فترة معينة، من حكم الدولة العباسية وجعلها حلقة وصل بين العراق والشام واتخاذها قاعدة  ثغرية للمسلمين ضد الروم البيزنطينين وانشأ الى جانبها مدينة الرافقة وتم تقسيمها على ثلاث رقات مختلفة رقة بيضاء، وسمراء، ووسطى.
