The People's Social Democratic Party in Turkey (1983 – 1985)
Main Article Content
Abstract
The Social Democratic People's Party (SDHP) was founded in the context of the reshaping of political life in Turkey following the 1982 coup. The formation of political parties was subject to strict state control, with restrictions imposed on founders and the exclusion of politicians associated with the previous regime.
Consequently, party formation was politically regulated rather than based on democratic pluralism. This study highlights the ideological dilemma faced by the Social Democratic Movement, which, as an indirect extension of the Republican People's Party (CHP), was vulnerable to rejection and political restrictions. This forced the party to change its name and symbol to avoid official exclusion.
The 1984 local elections marked a turning point, with the SDHP gaining ground while the CHP declined. The continued division within the democratic left led Erdal İnönü to advocate for unity through a merger, resulting in the formation of the Social Democratic People's Party as a stronger opposition force.
