Assessing the Extent of Water Erosion in the Wadi Kursi Bsin in Northwestern Iraq Using Geographic Techniques
Main Article Content
Abstract
Kursi Basin is a seasonal flow basin. The basin area is approximately 358 km2). The work method was based on data from Geographic Information Systems and remote sensing technologies (landsat 8 satellite imagery) to extract EPM equation data to estimate the volume of water erosion. The slope levels in the region vary between flat, medium and steep. The research area is affected by the Mediterranean climate. The rainfall amounts reached (331.4, 326, 230.8) mm respectively. As for vegetation cover, areas devoid of vegetation or with low density occupied the largest area, approximately (164) km2, representing (45.8%) of the total area of the study region. This leads to an increased susceptibility of the surface to water erosion due to high surface runoff and weak soil protection. The results of the study showed that the qualitative and quantitative assessment of water erosion in the Wadi Kursi basin, according to the PAP/CAR model, varied within the basin: very weak, weak, moderate, and severe. This variation is due to a set of natural and human factors in the region.
