Urban Expansion in Fallujah and its Impact on Water Pollution in the Euphrates River
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study examines urban expansion in the city of Fallujah and its implications for water pollution in the Euphrates River by analyzing the relationship between rapid urban growth and the deterioration of the physical and chemical properties of water. The research adopts a field-based analytical approach through the collection and analysis of water samples from multiple locations within the study area to identify the main pollution sources resulting from human activities associated with urban expansion.
The findings indicate elevated levels of several environmental indicators, particularly total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, and electrical conductivity, as a result of the direct or untreated discharge of sewage, industrial effluents, and solid waste into the river channel. The study also demonstrates that unplanned urban expansion has contributed to increased environmental pressure on the Euphrates River through the reduction of vegetation cover, increased surface runoff, and the growing presence of residential and industrial activities near the river. The research concludes that there is a direct correlation between urban expansion and the deterioration of water quality in the Euphrates River in Fallujah. This degradation has negatively affected the environment, public health, and agricultural uses. The study emphasizes the importance of adopting sustainable urban planning, establishing wastewater treatment facilities for both domestic and industrial effluents, and enforcing environmental regulations to reduce pollution levels and protect water resources.
