Abstract

This study aims to examine the structure of voiced and unvoiced sounds in the essays of At-Tabaq al-Dhahab fi al-Mawa’iz al-Baliqah by Sharaf al-Din al-Asfahani (d. 600 AH), analyzing them from a phonological stylistic perspective, with the goal of highlighting al-Asfahani’s approach in his selection of voiced and unvoiced sounds. This book was chosen for the present study because its subject is exhortation, and its purpose is to offer advice and guidance, reminding people to return to their senses and beware of their heedlessness. All of this requires forcefulness in counsel, clarity in exhortation, and the preacher’s reliance on the clearest sounds and a resonance in the ears to bring about awakening, reflection, and revival. The association of sounds with meanings was not the work of later Arabic scholars but was noted by the earlier authorities, foremost among them Sibawayh and Ibn Jinni, so all scholars after them must refer to them and adopt their views. Al-Asfahani, in his use of this phenomenon, was aware of its significance in cementing meaning in the minds of the audience, given the interconnection and cohesion between sound and its denotation. In his essays, the author has articulated this issue with the clearest language and the most precise expression: the sound through which the creator speaks serves as a veil for the meaning, and the reader discerns the author’s intent and purpose through the nature of the sounds he employs in his text.
