Spatial Suitability for Urban Expansion in Qura Hanjeer City
Main Article Content
Abstract
The urban fabric of Qura Hanjeer city is experiencing rapid growth due to population increase and socio-economic changes, placing significant pressure on land and public services. This research aims to evaluate the spatial suitability for urban expansion by applying spatial analysis techniques within the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment. A combination of physical and human criteria was used, including slope, elevation, proximity to roads, water treatment plant, administrative services, and existing residential areas. The study employed the Digital Overlay method in ArcGIS to produce a final suitability map, classifying the area into five suitability levels. Results revealed that "low" and "moderate" suitability classes dominate the city’s landscape, while areas with "very high suitability" represent only 4.2% of the total area. The study recommends directing urban expansion toward highly suitable zones, integrating GIS tools into urban planning decisions, and mitigating random urban sprawl through sustainable land-use strategies.
