Abstract

This study analyzes the spatial distribution of housing deficit patterns in Salah al-Din Governorate using Geographic Information Systems (GIS), based on demographic, household, and housing unit data for the years 2023. The research examines numerical, relative, and environmental distributions of the population, in addition to the spatial distribution of households and housing units, to reveal the extent of quantitative, qualitative, and overall housing deficits.

The results indicate significant population growth of approximately 110% during the study period, with clear spatial disparities among administrative units and a predominance of rural over urban population. The number of households increased from 101,823 in 1997 to 318,592 in 2023. Quantitative housing deficit reached 31,558 housing units in 2023, compared to 8,505 in 1997. The qualitative deficit decreased from 15,058 to 8,684 units, while the total housing deficit increased to 40,242 units. These deficits are attributed to demographic, security, and economic factors such as internal displacement, infrastructure degradation, and weak investment in the housing sector.

The study concludes with the need for integrated housing policies based on sustainable urban planning that addresses spatial and environmental imbalances in the population distribution.
