The role of geography curricula in promoting sustainable development: an applied study of the Middle East and North Africa region
Main Article Content
Abstract
Sustainable development represents a comprehensive framework that aims to meet the needs of the current generation without compromising the rights of future generations to achieve a decent livelihood. Achieving this goal requires concerted efforts at all levels, and education is at the forefront of these efforts. Geography, as a science that studies the relationship between humans and their environment, is one of the most important academic subjects capable of instilling concepts of sustainability in the minds of students. Due to its multidisciplinary nature that links humans, their environment, and economic and social activities, it provides analytical tools for understanding environmental challenges such as water scarcity, desertification, climate change, and environmental degradation, in addition to the social and economic issues associated with them.
The role of geographical education in the promotion of sustainable development goes beyond the mere teaching of geographical realities, to include the development of a comprehensive understanding of the interrelationships between natural and human systems, and the encouragement of critical thinking about global issues such as climate change, resource scarcity, and the unequal distribution of wealth. This research aims to explore how sustainable development contributes to enriching the content of geographical education, with a focus on modern methods that can be employed to develop geography curricula to serve the goals of sustainable development.
