Abstract

This study explores answer particles in the Arabic language from both grammatical and rhetorical perspectives. It aims to clarify the syntactic functions of these particles—such as naʿam (نعم), lā (لا), balā (بلى), ī (إي), and ajal (أجل)—and their role in sentence structure and semantic direction within various contexts.

The research also highlights the rhetorical value of these particles and their contribution to strengthening discourse, whether through affirmation, denial, confirmation, or emotional emphasis. It draws on examples from the Qur’an and classical Arabic literature to demonstrate the nuanced and deliberate use of these forms.

Based on the assumption that answer particles carry significant semantic weight, the study employs a descriptive-analytical method to reveal how these elements serve not only as functional grammatical tools but also as expressive devices central to Arabic eloquence .

The study concludes that distinguishing between these particles is crucial to understanding the intended meaning, and that their rhetorical use adds depth and clarity to both spoken and written expression.
