Abstract

Family disintegration is one of the most prominent challenges facing modern societies, due to its profound impact on the psychological and social structure of the individual and on the stability of societies as a whole. In light of this, the research aims to examine the effects of this disintegration in the novel "Dark Balcony" by Arian Saber Al-Daoudi, as a literary text that reflects a multi-dimensional family crisis. The novel tells the story of Najwa, a girl who grew up in a troubled home, where her mother is a neglectful, reckless person, whose behavior shifts to a pattern of revenge driven by jealousy and frustration after her husband is physically disabled in an accident. In this fractured family environment, Najwa suffers from neglect and a lack of emotional and psychological protection, which drives her to rebel and deviate, before her life ends in an absurd tragedy: a stray bullet ends her story without her having a chance at salvation. The research relied on a psychoanalytic and social approach to reading the narrative, characters, and structure of the novel, to uncover the profound psychological effects of the absence of family stability on children. It also sheds light on the narrative techniques used by the author to embody the tragedy and connect it to the social and political contexts of societies suffering from war.
