Alexithymia and Its Relationship with Parenting Styles among University Students
Main Article Content
Abstract
The current research aims to identify the relationship between the inability to express emotions and parental treatment methods among university students, and the extent to which parental treatment methods contribute to the inability to express emotions among university students. To achieve the research objectives, the (Toronto, 1994) scale for the inability to express emotions was adopted, consisting of (20) items, and the answer options for these items are five-point, which are: (completely agree, somewhat agree, neither agree nor disagree, relatively disagree, completely dissent) and consisting of three main dimensions, which are (difficulty in recognizing feelings, difficulty in describing feelings, and outward-oriented thinking). To measure parental treatment methods among university students, the (Kiki, 1991) scale was adopted, which contains two similar images, one of which is (Image A), which is specific to the father’s dealings with the children, and (Image B), which is specific to the mother’s dealings with the children. Each image represents (25) positions, and includes the following methods: (neglect, oscillation, tolerance, authoritarianism, firmness). The methods scale was corrected. Parental treatment, considering each style as a measure in itself, is done by giving one (1) score to the style indicated by the respondent and zero to the rest of the styles, noting that alternative (A) represents the firm style, alternative (B) represents the tolerance style, alternative (C) represents the authoritarian style, alternative (D) represents the neglect style, and alternative (E) represents the oscillation style. Since the number of situations is (25) situations for the father’s styles and (25) for the mother’s styles, the respondent gets (50) points for both forms of the scale covering the five styles, then the scores for each style are collected. After confirming the validity of the research scales and the psychometric properties, it was applied to a sample consisting of (200) male and female university students, with a total of (100) (100) students. The results indicated that university students have an inability to express emotions, and that parental treatment styles from the mother and father also affect them, and that there is a statistically significant relationship between the two variables. In light of the results, a number of recommendations and proposals were made for new studies
