Abstract

The reach addresses urban expansion in the city of Baghdad, explaining the reasons for the significant urban expansion that occurred after 2003 and its most significant impacts on the urban environment, including environmental degradation and high pollution rates, as well as the declining efficiency of community and infrastructure services, and the lack of these services in these areas.

Most Iraqi cities, especially Baghdad, suffer from a state of disorder that has led to a defect in urban expansion. This is due to the city’s inability and confusion in its ability to develop integrated development plans, as well as the increasing population growth. This urban expansion has led to problems that require special treatments, as it threatens the urban environment in Baghdad, such as the lack of green spaces and the loss of agricultural lands. This leads to increased pollution and encroachment on public lands and properties. Therefore, slum areas must be rehabilitated, sustainable urban projects must be developed, pollution must be reduced, the role of local communities must be activated, technology must be used in urban planning, and traditional concepts must not be adopted in order to support the growth and renewal of Baghdad, support economic diversity, and preserve the city’s identity.
