The impact of semantic development on the emergence of the phenomenon of synonymy, covenant words as an example
Main Article Content
Abstract
The phenomenon of synonymy represents a vibrant linguistic aspect in the life of languages. Since the law of evolution applies to language, it is always in a state of transition and renewal. As a result of this evolution, some terms acquire new meanings and become synonymous with their counterparts in the linguistic environment, particularly those terms that are similar in meaning, as well as those that convey general or universal meanings, and those that signify specific or partial meanings. Such terms may become synonymous due to their semantic development, as it frequently happens that the general becomes specialized or the specific becomes generalized, or that the field of meaning changes during linguistic use, gradually eliminating that variance, and subsequently, they serve as indicators of a single meaning over time. Thus, synonymy arises in such terms due to the evolution of their meanings through both narrowing and broadening, as well as shifting from one domain to another.
