The Political, Economic and Social Effects of the British Occupation in the Gambia 1843 - 1973
Main Article Content
Abstract
The continent of Africa was the heart of the old world and the center of geographical exploration and colonial competition between the major powers Britain, France and Germany. The Berlin Conference of 1884 was the first colonial conference to divide West Africa between European countries, especially Britain, France and Germany. It facilitated Britain's occupation of Gambia and it became a colony of the British crown. It played an important commercial role for Europe, especially the trade in slaves, peanuts, gum and oils. British colonialism was driven by political, economic and social factors that aimed to impose its presence on this country through Catholic and Protestant missionaries. Thus, the stations of British control and colonialism of Gambia began until 1973.
