Abstract

The poetry of wine represents one of the oldest themes in Arabic literature, spanning from pre-Islamic poets to contemporary works. The Arab poet eloquently expressed themes of wine in his verses, detailing its hues, origins, and the associated regrets. Since the pre-Islamic era, poets have incorporated references to the various types and aspects of wine, often accompanied by the mood of night and the celebration of intoxication.   However, with the advent of the Islamic era, such expressions faced prohibition under the caliphs. However, certain poets composed verses celebrating its consumption, and from that point In the Umayyad and Abbasid eras, the Abbasid poet drew inspiration from wine, with his portrayal of it in many of his poems reflecting a blend of originality and influence.  The expressions varied as well as the names for it, and some poets described its smell as well, and some of them were so fond of it that they waited for the end of the month of Ramadan to return to it, because of its strong influence on them and taking over their minds.    Among these poets is Ibn Linkak al-Basri (d. 360 AH), who wrote most of his poetry about wine, described it accurately, and     whose passion for it reached the point of longing for it   .
