Spatial Extension of Urban City Centers in Nineveh Governorate Between 2000-2020

Abstract
The study of the spatial extension of cities is one of the most important indicators of urban expansion and the growth of urban city centers in Nineveh Governorate—a matter that reveals the change that occurred during the 20-year period from 2000-2020. The study observes those changes that are reflected in the spatial extension of city centers and their urban expansion outside the boundaries of the basic design of their administrative division. This indicates the significant expansion in the area of these lands. For the purpose of high-accuracy concerning spatial differentiation, visual tools are used by the QuickBird satellite to draw the boundaries of urban centers according to the area of urban extension for the two periods, and then to reveal the changes that occur during this period and calculate the percentage of difference of the changed area in hectares to determine the spatial difference for the spatiotemporal urban sprawl of cities.
