The pressure level is 500 millibars and its impact on Iraq
Main Article Content
Abstract
The pressure level 500 millibar is considered one of the important pressure levels, because it represents the middle of the troposphere layer. The average elevation of this level is 5600 manifold meters above sea level This level includes upper winds that are free in their movement away from the influence of the force of friction on the surface, which are the westerly winds, or what are called geostrophic winds, and they range in their movement from west to east. The direction of these winds over Iraq (the westerns) is northwest or southwest. The presence of these winds during the summer indicates the existence of a subtropical jet stream. The main reason for the emergence of these winds is the balance between the pressure gradient towards the north and the Coriolis force that attracts the winds towards the east. Therefore, through this level and through knowledge of the waves at this level, it is possible to predict what is happening on the surface of pressure systems such as heights or depressions and the extent of their depth and depth is an important indicator of the strength of the pressure system, as some studies indicate the importance of this level through the use of its maps in drawing thickness maps between the surface level and the level of 500 millibars, the most important phenomena of this level are waves, and the upper waves appear in this level in the form of straight waves.
