Abstract

The present study sought to assess the effectiveness of Arabic language instructors in literacy centres, as perceived by supervisors and managers of indicated centres. The research sample included all Arabic language supervisors from literacy centres affiliated with the Baghdad directorates, totaling 54 supervisors, as well as 135 directors of returning literacy centres. The researcher administered a questionnaire to the directorates of education in the province of Baghdad. The questionnaire comprised 47 items that were categorized into six axes: lesson planning skills, teaching skills, knowledge of the scientific material, the teacher's understanding of the nature of the learners and their ability to interact effectively with them, the skill of evaluating the learners, and the personal and professional traits of the teacher.The researcher reached several results, including:


 That there are aspects in teaching skills: (axis) the degree of practice by teachers of the Arabic language is very high, namely: (the axis of knowledge of scientific material), (the axis of personal and professional characteristics), (understanding the nature of learners and good dealing with them) and (the axis of educational skills).


Recommendations including:


1- There should be an interest in the Department of Literacy Education in following up the reports of the educational supervisors of the Arabic language subject in the literacy centers, and in activating the recommendations contained therein with regard to the performance of Arabic language teachers.


2- The Literacy Education Department should hold intensive and comprehensive training courses for everything related to adult education, on all levels and technical aspects.


Suggestions including:         


1- Evaluating the performance of Arabic language teachers in literacy centers in all branches of the Arabic language.


2- Determining the training needs of Arabic language teachers in literacy centers.
