Abstract

A Safe Passage in Afrin was published in (2019), which is another narrative document on the Syrian tragedy presented by the Syrian novelist, haunted by the pain of war. Jan Dost opens another window on the war, in which we witness its facts and record its losses, but this time we look at that bleak scene through the eyes of a fourteen-year-old boy, Kameran, the boy who tells the story chapters to a yellow chalk, to document what happened, as it he gradually turns into a piece of chalk, which only seeks to tell, and only wanting to write down and record the memory of the war.

Through the psychological and physical transformations that occurred in Kameran and some of the other characters in the novel, Jan Dost was able to combine the fictional and the documentary, and formed its events in a dark nightmare miraculous atmosphere, evoking some world texts, legends and stories of the prophets. As the novel exposes the bazaars (markets) of politics and emphasizes that there is no safe passage in war but the path of death.
