Abstract

Many Arab countries have witnessed a growing phenomenon of child labor in the informal sector in cities and urban centers, especially countries that suffer from wars, civil and tribal conflicts, displacement and poverty, and Sudan is considered one of these countries. This research aimed at investigating the causes of child labor and its impact, as well as the economic and social characteristics of the respondents and their families in the research area. The research depends mainly on primary data collected through a questionnaire distributed to a stratified random sample of 100 working children in the markets of Omdurman, Khartoum State. The research uses frequencies and percentages as well as adopting a linear correlation to measure the correlation between child labor and the social, economic and educational level of the families of the sample members. The research finds that the majority of working children are exposed to financial exploitation, drug addiction, alcohol, tobacco, sexual exploitation, and dropping out of school. The results also confirmed that there is an inverse correlation with statistical significance between child labor and the economic, social and educational level of the families of the sample members. The research recommended that governments and policy makers in developing countries and Sudan in particular should take the protection of children from exploitation into consideration when developing plans and formulating policies to impose penalties on employers who exploit children.
