The Soviet Missile crisis in Europe 1979-1987 and the End of the Cold War
Main Article Content
Abstract
The détente that was developed during the first half of the 1970s led to an unprecedented level of cooperation between the great powers, the process was neither deterministic nor unfettered. The 1970s were of great concern to many American politicians who found that the Soviet Union had
become enjoying an aspect of the Treaty on the Limitation of Strategic Arms and was continuing the process of acquiring strategic weapons at the expense of the United States. The Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty undoubtedly played a role in restricting ballistic missiles, Europe was insistently excluded at the request of the United States and its partners in NATO, which angered the Soviet side, which was working to develop and deploy its weapons in Eastern Europe to raise the fears of the United States and force it to limit its weapons in Western Europe. The selection of the research topic came as the crisis of the deployment of Soviet missiles in Europe in 1979-1987 posed global concerns as it brought the western and eastern sides to the brink of a third world war, especially with the decision of the United States of America and Western Europe to deploy Pershing 11 missiles to restore balance in Europe after the deployment of Soviet missiles,
until the crisis reached its climax in 1983 after the deployment of Western American missiles, which prompted the two sides, especially after Khrushchev Gorbachev's accession to power in the Soviet Union to end that crisis with US President Ronald Reagan, which ended with the 1987
Treaty. The research was divided into several axes, the most important of which are the eginning of 1979-1982, the axis of the development of the Soviet missile crisis and its impact on Europe in 1983, the axis of nuclear and space talks: from Geneva to Washington 1985-1986, and finally the axis of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and the end of the Cold War.
