الملخص
شهدت الإمبراطورية البيزنطية ازدهاراً كبيراً خلال عصر الأسرة المقدونية وفي عهد الامبراطور يوحنا زيمسكيس(359ـ366هـ/ 969 ــ976م) الذي كان وصياً على باسيل الثاني([i]) وقسطنطين الثامن([ii]) , والذي شن حملاته العسكرية ضد المسلمين , مستغلا الضعف والتمزق الداخلي وانفصال العديد من الاقاليم عن الخلافة العباسية التي كانت تحت التسلط البويهي , فقد عمل يوحنا زيمسكيس على جمع كل موارد الدولة وانفقها على المؤسسة العسكرية , وكان يرمي من وراء هذه السياسة الاستيلاء على الاراضي الاسلامية , إذ كان الامبراطورية البيزنطية تعتبر تلك الاراضي هي املاك للإمبراطورية الرومانية , وإن ما دفع الامبراطور إلى توجيه الحملات ضد المسلمين في تلك المدة هو حالة الضعف والانقسام التي دبت بين حكام وولاة المسلمين ونزاعاتهم فيما بينهم والتي ادت إلى قيام الحروب بينهم تاركين الثغور والجهاد في سبيل الله , فتمكنت القوات البيزنطية في عهد ذلك الامبراطور من احراز انتصارات على المسلمين في الجزيرة الفراتية وبلاد الشام .
